I Wear Braces And It’s Worse Than You Can Imagine
★ Subscribe ACTUALLY HAPPENED:
This guy’s name is Marcus, and he wants to talk to you about braces. Pfff, is that really a big problem, you might say? Everyone wears them! It’s just a bit unpleasant, but then the results are fabulous! Marcus wishes that were true. He’s from among that rare 1% of people you may have all heard about but never met who gets all imaginable complications and worse than average results from them.
To start with, he used to have creepy teeth. Some say that theirs look like vampire’s. His were more like Frankenstein’s or a zombie’s. So yes, he was the target for braces like, 100%. His mom took him to see a dentist, a nice guy who was going to be his best friend for many months to come. Marcus initially felt enthusiastic – hurray, he thought, I’ll finally have normal teeth and won’t be ashamed to smile anymore! His appointment to put the braces in started very well – the doctor explained everything to him, let him choose the color (he chose green to match his eyes), and started his work.
Good lord, it was horrible! They certainly looked quite ok, but the pain was just unbearable! The doc just gave him an enormous smile and said “It’ll pass in no time! Brace yourself!” Ha-ha, funny joke…He had heard already that the pain would stick around for about a week, and you needed to survive on liquid food because otherwise it was too painful. But the pain actually didn’t pass. The pain after all was not so much strong as just irritating. But he had to adapt.
So, trying to forget that dull pain in his gums, lips and cheeks, Marcus started to live his life as a guy with braces. It was strange to have all those wires in his mouth, he felt like the girl from Finding Nemo, but at least they didn’t look too ugly. He was scared that people would make fun of him, but as soon as you get your braces, you start noticing that there are lots of people around also wearing them, and no one bullies you. Thankfully, it seems, braces stopped looking weird many years ago.
It would be nice if life were that simple. There were certain problems that stalked Marcus. First, cleaning. They say that cleaning braces two times a day is enough, but don’t believe it. You have to clean your teeth after eating, because literally everything sticks inside of them. And you also have to rinse them all the time. Actually, you have to take care of your teeth all day, and sometimes it seemed that it took more time than sleeping. Five types of toothbrushes, mouthwash, floss, water flosser… And all this with constant pain, remember?
Second, eating. Well, as everyone knows, nothing cold, hot, hard, crunchy, or sticky. Right, so you have to go on a diet. The problem is that no one else has that diet, so you can imagine how Marcus felt when he had lunch with his family and they were having a steak with corn on the cob, and all he got was freaking tomato soup!
Ah, yes, regarding the pain once again. Marcus went to the dentist once a month to fix his braces. Apart from the constant dull pain, he had additional, excruciating pain for the whole week after each visit. It seemed like they were mocking him every time they suggested he change the color of the braces – as if he cared at all what color they were! And every time he left, the dentist gave him a smile and said, “Brace yourself!” EVERY TIME! Good lord, he started to hate him with all his heart.
And the worst thing was the elastic bands. OF COURSE they caused him more pain, and OF COURSE they were uncomfortable to wear, but the unhappiest moments were when he suddenly opened his mouth and they flew out of it. How is that even possible?! No one else lost them apart from him. And once, like in a comedy movie, one flew out of his mouth straight into the eye of a girl he liked. That was super-gross.
All in all, when the time came to take them off he was on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Thankfully, at least his teeth looked better now, so all that pain was not in vain. Marcus can’t describe the relief he felt when the doc took them off! No pain, no wires in his mouth anymore…As he left, he even told his doc to brace himself. That was satisfying.
Imagine the shock he felt when after several months he noticed his teeth moving back again! The solution was to put braces back for some more time and then wear retainers that are invisible wires on the back of the teeth to fix them. It was a shock. He thought about having to repeat the whole process again and felt dizzy. No, please, no! Those were the worst two years of his life.
He decided to brace himself indeed, and refused. His teeth were in any case better than they had been initially, and he preferred being happy with imperfect teeth to hating the whole world with an ideal smile. He’s not ashamed of his smile even if it’s not the most beautiful one.
