This guy is called Adrian, and he had a hobby that made everyone think that he wasn’t a real man. Sounds weird, right?
So, his hobby was…playing with dolls and collecting them. Since he was a little kid, Adrian’s always preferred dolls to traditional toys intended for boys. He always found it much more interesting to choose dresses for dolls, and he was fascinated by decorating doll houses and stuff like that. It wasn’t a big deal when he was a kid, and his parents and older sister weren’t against it.
When he started high school, he didn’t exactly play with them, but he kept collecting them. You know, some people collect coins or action figures? Well, Adrian collected dolls. This also affected his sense of style – he also preferred a more flamboyant choice of clothes and hairstyles.
But for most of his life, he nevertheless hid his passion from pretty much everyone except his closest friends. But when he started high school, his secret got out in the most awkward way possible. His sister’s friends came over to their house, and accidentally caught a glimpse of his room full of dolls. One of them took a photo and later started showing it to people.
Stuff like this inevitably travels fast, and soon enough, the guys from his class found out about it. They started making fun of him because of it – some of them just made relatively innocent jokes, but a certain group of four guys started to really mock him every day about it.
They kept saying how girly he was, and joking that he probably wore dresses while nobody was looking. It was bearable at first, but every day it was getting worse, because they were actively telling these things to everyone. Soon, the entire school knew about Adrian’s secret hobby.
His nickname became “Adriana”, and the kids at his school took every opportunity they got to offend him. Almost EVERY TIME he tried to say something, they would parody what he said in a girly voice. This continued for a couple of months, and he didn’t want to go to school because of it. His sister felt terribly guilty because of what had happened, and she stopped being friends with the girl who took the photo. Moreover, she defended him against anyone who dared to say a bad thing about Adrian.
Later, Adrian found photoshopped images of him wearing lipstick and other “girly” stuff. It was at this point that he just couldn’t take it anymore; he didn’t want everyone to think that he was too girly, so he tried desperately to appear more manly than he was. He started wearing darker clothing, reading about cars and other stuff that he thought most of the boys liked. He even tried to talk in a deeper voice and be more aggressive – like, by mocking other guys and making nasty jokes.
But nobody would believe any of it so long as he still had his dolls. So he did something that he still regrets to this day: he threw all his dolls away in a fit of rage. He could at least have given them to some kid or donated them to somewhere. But instead, he just threw them out and took photos to prove it. He had collected them his whole life and then…all of them gone in one day.
The guys at his school continued to make fun of him, but now did so less and less every day. Soon, everything was kind of alright. Nobody bothered him, and he thought that he would feel better that way, but honestly, he hated being so isolated all the time. But he desperately wanted to be as manly as the other guys.
Then, one day, something happened. In a hallway, a bunch of younger boys (like, a year younger) were harassing a girl from their class. She was a shy girl with a speech defect. She was asking them to go away, but they would just repeat what she said, parodying her speech.
Adrian’s own classmates were standing not too far away, laughing and filming it on their phones. He joined them, but…he didn’t find it funny at all. He doesn’t like conflicts, and even the thought of trying to stop it was terrifying to him. But if he wouldn’t do it, then who would?
So he started walking towards them. The guys from his class didn’t understand what was happening at first. He stood between the girl and the younger boys, and said “Stop bothering her!”
Of course, they started mocking him, saying things like: “oh, look Adriana came to help”. He went up real close to one of them, like eye to eye, and said quietly “go away”. The boy kept on mocking, but Adrian just stood real close to him, not budging an inch. Soon, they got afraid and went away. His classmates were stilling laughing and filming what was happening. He didn’t care though…
